The pupils are placed in mixed ability classes according to age.  Within each class children are grouped to work at their appropriate ability level. In maths, the children work in ability sets in all years.

Children of junior school age still benefit enormously from the safety, security and pastoral continuity of working for the majority of their time with their own class teacher. From time to time, however, it is helpful for the children to work with different teachers. This is an important step in preparing them for the next stages of their education at secondary school when they will work with many different teachers for the various subjects. The school employs teachers who are well known to us and are available to take classes whilst teachers are on courses or having some precious non contact time.

SPECIAL NEEDS PROVISION

Sometimes children will experience learning difficulties or display emotional or behavioural problems.  If this occurs the teacher will liaise with parents, the Special Needs Co-ordinator and Headteacher.  Extra teaching help is available for children with special needs as well as more able children from our own teaching and classroom support staff. If more help is thought to be required then advice is sought from the Special Needs Advisory Team. The Language Base, which offers special provision for pupils with speech and language difficulties, is an integral and valued part of our school.

The school follows the guidance laid down in the (revised) Code of Practice for pupils with Special Educational Needs. The school’s own policy sets out in more detail the school’s approach and procedures for pupils with special educational needs. The policy is available from the school.
